My approach to fine-line tattoos

I love doing fine-line tattoos. The fine, delicate lines work well with my soft touch. Traditional tattooing says bold will hold, and my philosophy is that all tattoos will hold, regardless of how thick the lines are. If the ink is applied properly, it isn’t going anywhere. The ink does naturally spread in the skin over time, so if the lines are finer, they will stay smaller in years ahead.

Some people prefer to just have the outline of a tattoo. I can do that and take pride in being meticulous with the line work, but my favorite way to create tattoos is with layers. In addition to clean lines, I love shading and color in tattoos.

How I Layer a Tattoo

So, I approach my tattoos in stages. Starting with fine lines in the first session, adding shading in the next, and having a third color session to complete the tattoo. It depends on the size of the piece and for larger work I’ve found that allowing the body to heal in between these stages is the least traumatic to the skin.

Black and Grey Shading

The shading really brings the tattoo to life and makes it look less flat than just lines alone. Having that black and grey base under the color adds depth and shadows that it wouldn’t have on its own.
